Celebrating Multilingualism & Advocacy for Latine Students' Success

Updated: Sep 19

At LatinoLEAD, our commitment to systemic change in education remains a driving force in closing the opportunity gap for Latine students across Minnesota. We believe every student and family deserves access to high-quality education, and investing in schools, student support, and teacher development is essential for long-term success. The urgency of this mission is underscored by the fact that there are over 13 million Latine students and 5 million English Learners in public schools across the country, according to UnidosUS, highlighting the critical need for ongoing advocacy in education reform.

On August 7, 2024, LatinoLEAD's Education Action Team (E.A.T.) hosted an inspiring event, "Closing the Gap for Latine Students: The Critical Role of Multilingualism & Investment in English Language Learning," at Metro State University. The gathering was an opportunity for education leaders, advocates, and community members to come together and reflect on the progress made in supporting Latine students while identifying the work still ahead.

A key focus of the event was the recognition of the vital role multilingualism plays in student success and the importance of investing in English Language Learning (ELL) programs. Special guest Carlos Mariani Rosa, former State Representative and Executive Director of MN Education Equity Partnership, along with Senator Liz Boldon (District 25, DFL), shared their insights on the current landscape of education in Minnesota and the efforts to ensure that English Learners are supported throughout their academic journeys.

Mariani Rosa emphasized that “multilingual learners are assets to our state,” reflecting the belief that when we invest in these students, we invest in Minnesota’s future. With powerful voices like his, alongside many other dedicated advocates from across the state, the event reinforced the idea that multilingual learners are essential contributors to our shared progress and well-being.

We also took a special moment during the event to honor the exceptional leadership of Ambar Hanson and Dr. Beatriz DeSantiago, who have served as the Co-Chairs of the Education Action Team. Their dedication to advancing the success of Latine students and English Learners has been transformative, and we are deeply grateful for their tireless advocacy. Through their tenure, Hanson and DeSantiago have helped shape E.A.T.’s vision and impact, leaving a lasting legacy that will continue to guide our work for years to come.

A Celebration of Progress and a Call to Action

This celebration was not only a reflection on the progress we’ve made but also a call to action for those in attendance to continue advocating for the academic success of Latine students and English Learners. Attendees had the chance to engage in meaningful conversations with other Latine education leaders, network with fellow advocates, and explore opportunities to get involved with E.A.T. as we work toward ensuring every student receives the support they need to thrive.

With education equity at the forefront of our efforts, the event served as a reminder that closing the gap for Latine students requires a collective approach. From advocating for policies that enhance English Language Learning programs to investing in Latine educators and leaders, we are committed to making a meaningful difference that will benefit future generations.

LatinoLEAD’s Education Action Team continues to lead efforts to improve the educational outcomes for Latine students in Minnesota, and we are excited about the work ahead. We invite everyone to join us in this movement, whether through advocacy, volunteering, or supporting our initiatives. Together, we can ensure that multilingual students and their families are seen for the invaluable contributions they bring to our schools and communities.
