AfroLatinidad 2023, held at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, was a monumental success! As photos, videos, and commendations continue to flood in from community leaders, let's delve into what made this day so remarkable:
Community-led Collaboration: This community-focused celebration was made possible through a meaningful collaboration between LatinoLEAD, Boriken Cultural Center, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art, along with a host of other Latinx cultural organizations.
Inclusive Space: The event was intentionally designed as a diasporic, pan-African, and Latinx, multilingual, and multicultural space, radiating pride and solidarity.
Institutional Access: The event opened up traditionally challenging-to-access institutions, inviting our communities to engage as partners.
Re-Vision Exhibit Connection: The celebration was strategically linked with the Re-Vision Exhibit, mutually providing rich context.
Immersive Experience: The day was planned to provide a relaxed immersive environment, encouraging attendees of all ages to embrace and learn through culture.
"Pelo Bueno" Reading and Tutorial: To seamlessly connect the ancestral with the contemporary, a reading from "Pelo Bueno" and a head wrap tutorial were facilitated. Scholar and activist Yolanda Arroyo-Pizarro highlighted the significance of Minnesota's CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair).
AfroLatinx Authors' Connection: Afrolatinx authors, Yolanda Arroyo-Pizarro and Pamela Mercado Michelli, were brought into the spotlight. Their books are now available for purchase at the MIA's shop.
